Farallon Details About the Merpeople
Q. Are merpeople’s teeth the same as humans?
A. Yes and no. The front of their teeth look just like human teeth. However, behind both the top and bottom rows, there is a second set of teeth that are razor sharp. They look a lot like very small shark’s teeth. You can’t see them by just talking to them. That’s why no one ever thought they were there. A dentist discovered these teeth by accident using his dental mirror.
Q. Is a mermaid’s hair different from humans?
A. A mermaid’s hair is impossible to pull out and cannot be cut, so a magic brush is the only way to get one of her hair strands.
To get a strand of hair from a mermaid, a merchap (A merchap is a young merman who has not been joined with a mermaid yet) uses a magic brush to retrieve a hair strand from a mermaid.
Q. How can a merchap get a hair strand from a mermaid if her hair cannot be cut or pulled out?
A. A merchap uses a magical brush that he uses to brush her hair. It is still difficult to retrieve a strand of hair, but with patience, a single strand can finally be loosened, but only with a merchaps magic brush.
Q. Where do the merchaps get a magic brush.
A. No one knows. Not even a mermaid knows. This knowledge is only passed down from Donda to Merchap from generation to generation.
Q. Why does a merchap need to brush a stand of hair from a mermaid?
A. If a merchap and mermaid wish to be joined together, the merchap must first retrieve a hair strand from the mermaid who agrees to be joined with him. Then they bring the hair strand to the Merqueen. If the merqueen agrees with the joining of a mermaid and a merchap, the Merqueen wraps the mermaid’s hair strand around the red portion of the egg sack for a new fledgling to grasp once they are born.
Q. Can a merchaps hair be cut or pulled out?
A. Yes. But since there are no scissors in the ocean, a merchaps hair grows long, but usually not as long as mermaid’s hair. There is an exception however. A true Merking is the only male of the merworld who also has hair that cannot be pulled out or cut. Not even a magic brush can take a strand of hair from a true Merking.
Q. What are bindings?
A. A binding is just like braids that humans put in their hair. Each year, a new binding (braid) is added to each of the merchildren’s hair until they reach the age of Gillet or Shellet.
Q. What does joining mean?
A. Joining is very much like marriage in the human world. However, the joining won’t be accepted unless the couple are going to receive a young merchild (fledgling) to raise.
Q. How do the merpeople get their fledglings or babies?
A. A Merqueen is the only one who produces an egg sack with hundreds of fledglings inside. This takes place only once a year. When they are born, the fledglings will grab onto one of the hair strands belonging to a mermaid that the Merqueen had wrapped around her egg sack. Then the fledgling will instinctively go to the mermaid the hair strand belongs to.
Q. Do the merpeople have marriage ceremonies?
A. Yes. Once a year, a new egg sack hatches so all the merpeople have the same birthday. A huge ceremony is held. The Merqueen holds a special ceremony for all the couples to be joined with their new young ones. The Merqueen will magically remove the mermaid’s hair binding and the mermaid becomes a mermarm (mother). She is now joined with her merchap who is now called a merdonda (father).
Q. What is the egg sack like?
A. Merpeople are born from eggs that are kept in an egg sack. The egg sack holds hundreds of eggs and the egg sack grows larger and larger as the eggs inside grow. Only the merqueen is able to produce the eggs.
The egg sack is so strong, nothing on earth can break into it. The egg sack also has a red line around it which grows just before the egg sack is ready to hatch. Just before the egg sack bursts open, the red line will grow and completely cover the egg sack. The red line becomes so hot, it causes the egg sack to melt through anything. As soon as the red line completely covers the egg sack, it bursts open and the fledglings are able to break free. They pour out of the egg sack and they each grab onto a mermaid’s hair strand.
An egg sack is only produced once a year so all generations are celebrated each year when new families are joined together.
Q. What do fledglings look like?
A. Fledgling’s skin is a very dark green when they are first born. Their skin lightens as they get older, and by the time they are completely grown, their skin is many different shades of color, just like humans.
Once fledglings are born, they are no bigger than your thumb, but after they grab onto a mermaid’s hair strand and swim to the mermaid the hair strand belongs to, they start to grow at an alarming rate. By the time a fledgling reach their mermaid, the fledgling is the size of a new born human baby.
Q. What is a fledgling?
A. All newborn merbabies are called fledglings until they reach their first year. They are all hatched at the same time each year.
Q. What is a merchild?
A. Merchildren are between the ages of 1 and 12. A merchild can be either a boy or a girl. Once a fledgling reaches the age of one, he or she are now called a merchild.
Q. What is a boy merperson called?
A. A merboy, merchild or young one until he reaches the age of Gillet.
Q. What is a girl merperson called?
A. A mermaiden, merchild or young one until she reaches the age of Shellet.
Q. What does it mean when a merboy reaches the age of Gillet?
A. When a merboy reaches the age of 13 (or the age of Gillet) he is no longer considered a merchild. He is now a merchap and all his hair bindings (braids) are released and his hair flows freely.
Q. What does it mean when a mermaiden reaches the age of Shellet?
A. When a mermaiden reaches the age of 13 (or the age of Shellet) she is no longer considered a merchild. She is now a mermaid and all her hair bindings (braids) are released and her hair flows freely except for one binding (braid). This is only removed magically by the Merqueen once she is joined with a merchap.
Q. What is a merchap?
A. Now a male merchild has become a teenager as we know it in the human world. A merchap can also be a merman who is not joined with a mermaid. Once a merboy reaches the age of Gillet, or age 13, he is now a merchap and no longer has bindings in his hair.
Q. What is a mermaid?
A. Now a female merchild, (mermaiden) has become a teenager as we know it in the human world. A mermaid is not joined with a merchap. Once a mermaiden reaches the age of Shellet, or age 13, she is now a mermaid and no longer has bindings in her hair except for one braid. She has a single binding in her hair usually worn on the side to let others know she is still a mermaid.
Q. What do the merpeople call dad or father?
A. Merdonda, or Donda. A merman who is joined with a mermarm and is raising (or has already raised) a fledgling into maturity.
Q. What do the merpeople call their mom or mother?
A. Mermarm, or Marm. A merwoman who is joined with a merdonda and is raising (or has already raised) a fledgling into maturity. Her single binding is gone.
Q. How do the merpeople name their fledglings?
A. Unlike humans, the colony has a huge celebration each year and the whole colony is involved with naming each merchild after they turn one year old. During the 1st year of a fledgling’s life, they are only known as “fledgling” or “Young one.”
Q. How do sea shells become magical?
A. Shells become magical after the Merqueen’s beautiful and powerful tear lands on one. Only a true Merqueen can produce a magic shell. However, there must be two magic shells to make them work. The shells are clicked together when a merperson wishes to make something happen. The merperson must first ask permission from the Merqueen to use them because they are so powerful.
